Meaning that you have to have an active internet connection and rely on Garmin's web servers to be up and running to upload a simple GPX to the device.

That brings up another point - all of this software used to move routes onto your Inreach is web based. Voila, it does not reduce track points to 200. Then go to the Inreach site and import your routes from your Garmin connect courses. I have no idea why it's like this - but you can instead upload your GPX files as 'courses' in Garmin Connect. I've had extremely detailed routes going over Canyonlands slick-rock get trimmed to where it decides to take you up a sheer cliff. Also, if you upload your GPX directly as a route to that site, it trims it down to below 200 tracepoints.
The import function is clunky at best and totally missing at worst (currently the feature is randomly missing from the site for the last few days). ultimately your GPX file has to end up in Garmin (DeLorme's) Inreach web portal to sync routes to the device. It doesn't matter if you used Google Earth, Mapmyride, Basecamp, etc. What really got my panties in a twist was how you get routes onto the device. Unless all the trails in your area are straight lines?Īnyway, that's not really even the part I mean about recalibrating expectations. To me that's no way to navigate at all and makes you wonder why they even bothered with the feature. Basically you can tell it to navigate to a waypoint (whether it's a predefined map POI or a waypoint you've created) and it will give you a straight line to that waypoint. What it will not do is accurate and detailed turn-by-turn navigation using routable trail maps. Specifically, if all you need is a topo map, the ability to create a route, waypoints and see yourself on the map in relation to all of that - then this unit does the job. It does the 1st thing surprisingly well, as I've had messages send through with pretty heavy tree cover in a minute or two.Īfter having played with the rather bizarre mapping & sync software and muddled through all of its features - I've figured out that my navigation needs are met. I personally bought it to be used 1st as a communicator/tracker & emergency locator and 2nd as a GPS unit. If you are used to other high end Garmin GPS units for navigation then it might be worth recalibrating expectations. r/Travel <- A community about going places.Īn an Explorer+ user I thought I'd chime in about the GPS nav features. r/AdvancedBackpacking <- The hardcore technical side of backpacking r/searchandrescue <-A subreddit for former, current, or prospective members of any Search and Rescue organization, paid or volunteer. r/UrbanSurvivalism <- DIY, improvisation, train hitching, urban exploration, hobo, TEOTWAWKI, post collapse, and surivalist posts are all welcome here r/Ultralight <- For our ultralight brethren r/HammockCamping <- Discussions about camping with Hammocks r/MYOG <- Make your own gear!
